Winneconne Students Again Significantly Exceed Expectations

The Winneconne Community School District students continue to Significantly Exceed Expectations!  The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has released the State assessment results from the 2018-19 school year.  Our students knocked it out of the park again! The Winneconne Community School District achieved the highest ranking of Significantly Exceeds Expectations on the State Report Cards for the second year in a row.

Credit for the high results goes to students, staff focus and family support.

According to Don Smith, Winneconne Community School District Director of Teaching and Learning, “We honestly have the most incredible staff, students and community.  Everyone believes all students should and can learn at high levels. The staff does everything they can to ensure students reach that high bar.”

District Administrator, Peggy Larson, said, “The District’s overall score of 87.0 earned the district its label as Significantly Exceeding Expectations by the State of Wisconsin. This is the highest label a district can earn.”  She attributes Winneconne’s success to the students who deserve the credit for their achievement. She also acknowledges community and parental support of student learning and the highly engaged and motivated teachers and staff who all place a significant role in this achievement.

Don Smith shared the district continues to work on four focal areas, including district-wide literacy, educator effectiveness, grading and reporting, and professional learning communities. “We continue to have building-wide goals in these areas, we focus on less and strive to do it well.”

The School Report Card is primarily based on last year’s performance on the Forward Exam, Aspire assessment, and the ACT, the 2018-19 school year.  At the foundation of the report cards are four priority areas. Schools and districts receive a score for each priority area:

  • Student Achievement proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics on the annual state assessments.  Winneconne had a score of 45.2 out of 50 in ELA. And a score of 41.9 out of 50 in Math.
  • School Growth measured by year-to-year progress in ELA and math achievement. Winneconne had a score of 36.8 out of 50 in ELA. And a score of 38.7 out of 50 in Math.
  • Closing Gaps in performance between specific student groups (comparing English language learners, low-income students, students with disabilities, and members of a racial or an ethnic group with their peers). Winneconne had a score of 41.2 out of 50 in ELA. And a score of 45.8 out of 50 in Math.
  • On-Track and Postsecondary Readiness showing reliable predictors of how many students are on-track to graduate from high school and student readiness for post-high school success. Winneconne had a score of 93.8 out of 100 in this area.
