Medication at School

It is important to understand that the administration of medication to our students is both a medical and legal process. Before any medication can be administered the parent/guardian and possibly the primary care provider of the child, must provide the school district with written documentation providing both consent and directions. Please review the information below.

Prescription and Nonprescription Medication

Students can receive medication at school, if the parent/guardian has followed the guidelines outlined below:
  • Complete the Medication/Treatment Authorization Form;
  • All medication must be brought to school by the parent/guardian, NOT the student;
  • All prescription medication requires BOTH a physician signature and parent/guardian signature;
  • All nonprescription medication requires only a parent/guardian signature, UNLESS the dosage is outside of the recommendations of the manufacturer, in which case a physician signature IS required;
  • All medication must be brought in the original pharmacy/manufacturer labeled container;
  • Any changes in prescription medication administration, or discontinuation of the medication requires a statement from the physician and the parent/guardian in writing to the school nurse.

Stock Medication (for Middle School and High School students ONLY)

The district offers stock (over the counter) medication ONLY to middle school and high school students during school hours. This decision came in effort to help keep our students in school, and as a courtesy to our families and students. The medications available to students are:
  • Regular strength Tylenol (Acetaminophen)
  • Extra strength Tylenol (ES Acetaminophen)
  • Advil (Ibuprofen)
  • Tums (Calcium Carbonate)
  • Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)
If you would like your child to receive stock medication at school, please complete the Consent for Administration of Stock Medication and drop off at your student's respective school.

Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Your child can receive complementary or alternative medicine at school to treat health ailments IF the following guidelines have been met:
  • The medication is FDA approved;
  • If the medication is not FDA approved, it must be signed by both the parent/guardian AND physician;
  • The medication must be brought to school by the parent/guardian;
  • The medication must be brought in original labeled container;
  • The Medication/Treatment Authorization Form must be completed.

**All completed forms and medication can be dropped off with the secretaries at the student's respective school**
