Wisconsin DPI District Report Card

November 18, 2016 - Winneconne

The Winneconne Community School District released today that it has achieved the ranking of Significantly Exceeds Expectations on the State Report Cards. Their announcement comes on the heels of the public release of all results for Wisconsin public school districts by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

Credit for the high results goes to students, staff focus and family support.

According to Garth Larson, Winneconne's Director of Learning, there is one main initiative the district focuses on. "Our focus is on student learning. "There is a big difference between focusing on teaching and focusing on learning," said Garth Larson. "We stay focused on student learning." District Administrator Peggy Larson said that the District's overall score of 83.3 earned the district its label as significantly exceeding expectations by the State of Wisconsin. This is the highest ranking that a District could get, and Winneconne Community School District is the only district in the Fox River Valley area that achieved this level. She attributes Winneconne's success first to the students, who deserve the credit for their achievement, she said. She also credits the district's sustained a focus on key areas; community and parental support of student learning; and highly engaged and motivated teachers and staff.

Garth Larson shared the district has been working on four focal points for several years, including district-wide literacy, educator effectiveness, grading and reporting, and professional learning communities. "We have building wide goals in these areas, we have professional development, and we focus on less and try to do it really, really well," said Garth Larson.

Peggy Larson said that these types of results are not possible, without the support of staff and community. "Families want us to do really well, and they are willing to do their part to help us do that," said Peggy Larson. "We have incredible community support, and staff feels it. It really helps."

Principal's Message

Welcome to Winneconne Elementary School where we are Learning Today and Leading Tomorrow! We have a 4K-5 building with about 740 students divided up into five classrooms at each grade level. Winneconne Elementary School is a great place to learn, grow, and have fun!

My name is Lisa Hughes, and I am the principal at Winneconne Elementary School.  I taught in the Winneconne Community School District for 16 years at various grade levels (3,4,5,8)  prior to becoming principal in 2007.  I am fortunate to work with a dedicated team made up of teachers, dean of students, counselors, administrators, secretaries, custodians, cafeteria workers, tutors, and volunteers.  Our school, in partnership with the community, provides students with numerous opportunities to learn, grow, and become productive members of society.  Our school goal is focused on writing.  Our students engage in writing on a daily basis; teachers provide guided instruction to help writers meet their goals.  We also love reading here at WES!  Our students are eager to read each day, and we enjoy sharing our favorite literature with others.  Students also focus on math about one hour each day, and they learn social studies, science, and Spanish.  Specialists provide instruction in music, art, and physical education.  Our days are filled with learning!

Our PBIS (Positive Behavioral and Intervention Supports) motto is Practice kindness, Always show respect, and Work to do your best (PAW).  When students’ actions support our PAW expectations, they earn tickets that can be used for different rewards.  We also recognize two students monthly from each grade level who consistently model excellent character.  These students of the month get to have pizza with the principal and popcorn with the principal (4K) and have their picture in the local paper and displayed on our bulletin board.  We meet every other month as an entire student body to celebrate our successes, and we continue to reinforce our PAW expectations so we can follow the ‘Winneconne Way.’

Feel free to come and visit our elementary school.  We are happy to answer questions and provide you with more information upon request.

Dean of Students Message

Hi! My name is Mike Meunier and I am the dean of students at Winneconne Elementary School. This is my second year, and I look forward to continuing to build relationships with staff, students, parents, and the community. My main goal is to assist Mrs. Hughes in the maintenance of a positive, safe and orderly school environment that promotes maximum teaching and learning opportunities for students and teachers. Some of my main responsibilities include school safety, PBIS, discipline, and busing. Our PBIS activities and instruction have had a positive impact on student behaviors.  We strive for excellence so we continue to practice and reteach our students. Each month a class is selected to have “Donuts with the Dean” for following and showing “The Winneconne Way” throughout the school.

Please feel free to contact me at anytime with any questions or concerns.
